Depeche Mode started their career as a teenage synth pop band scoring a couple of hit singles in the early eighties but when their principle songwriter Vince Clarke unexpectedly quit to form Yazoo, no one expected them to survive, let alone reach the heights of fame they subsequently did. Depeche Mode reinvented themselves over the next few years and synth player Martin Gore came into his own as a songwriter, shifting the bands musical focus from pop to much darker adult themes and a heavier industrial based sound. The band became a phenomenon on both sides of the Atlantic and by 1990 had become one of the biggest acts in the world with their winning combination of pop hooks and clever lyrical themes.
