In December of 1996 the band went into the recording studio for the first time to record. Roughly six hours later a 10 track, 70 minute long live demo was born. There are no more copies of the original tape available.
The response generated by the tape encouraged the band to record their debut CD. To make matters suitably ambiguous the band changed it's name to Sh'mantra and released the CD under the title "Cornucopia". The album was released and is distributed by the Music label 'Cranium Music'. In May 2001 Sh'mantra released it's Second album "formula orange". A double CD independently produced and released. Sh'mantra has been associated with experimental rock music but can cover the full spectrum of dark ambient to cacophonous noise-art to psychedelic jazz. .
Influences have been observed by listeners comparing Sh'mantra to groups such as Radiohead, Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Tangerine Dream and Neu. The music of Sh'mantra is characterised by long instrumentals, sparse vocals and unusual sound-scaping. The band makes modern music with a sometime disturbing feel to it. .
Live, Sh'mantra are committed to portraying the emotive intensity of the sprock ethos with a careful blend of both intricately detailed foundations and unpredictable improvised fancy. Individually the members of Sh'mantra have come from a varied musical background with smatterings of rock, a darker form of metal, electronica and even contemporary classical. However Sh'mantra is not recognisable as the sum of it's parts. What is recognisable is that the members of Sh'mantra all share a common philosophy to re-invent the atom and to recreate the cosmos. Sh'mantra have now released their second full length album. The album is a double CD and is called "formula orange". The album advances further along the path set out by "Cornucopia" whislt delivering more detail, depth and texture. .
