Who is Frolic, you ask? For a true definition, you might say that Frolic is a hard-rock band out of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. This would hardly begin to describe the sound, effort, work ethic, and true dedication that Frolic has to its sound and its fans. It might be truer to say that Frolic is more than just a band, but an entertainment franchise, with well rounded demonstrations of talent, enthusiasm, and fun all wrapped up in a big enigmatic sandwich. With Christian Sly's "fibrous" voice, Hoek's "dominating stage presence", Tull Rea IV's staggering combination of "beats and enthusiastic drumming" and Matt Setzer's "electrifying leads", Frolic has put together a winning combination of style, grace, and in your face aggression that hasn't been seen in Texas in quite some time. But one would only have scratched the surface of the Frolic dimension. Often bursting into three and four part harmonies makes Frolic sound just slightly different than most other "traditional" rock bands. Or, one might get lucky enough to see a rare, choreographed drum sequence between Setzer and Rea (both were drum line captians in high school), demonstrating a level of skill unattained by most bands. Throw in Hoek's dry wit spurting over the crowd, with just a dash of Sly's unrelenting need to poke fun at the other members of Frolic, and all of a sudden, you have much more than a typical rock band. You now have a 4 member, traveling entertainment troupe who happens to play some of the catchiest rock you might have experienced. This combination has allowed Frolic to share the stage with such amazing acts as Flickerstick, Sugarbomb, Bowling for Soup, Dollybraid, and Bob Schneider.
Sure, you may not like the music itself. You might not like the unrelenting Frolic energy. You make scoff at the childish jokes that take place on stage. You may not even like the fact that Frolic gives the same show to 300 people as it does to 30, but chances are you are going to like just one of those facets. And if you happen to like one of those, you just might like one of the other hundreds of intangibles that Frolic gives on a nightly basis. Put them all together, and you will understand why the Frolic audience grows exponentially from show to show. Do yourself a favor. Go see a show. You won't regret it.
