Editorial Reviews
Is there more to musical success than getting played on a car commercial? Is there such a thing as the anti-anti-Britney? Is it Nu Metal or Nü Metal? One thing is certain: the heavy South Florida band jokerjokerjoker is a little too real, creative and just plain ugly to hock soft drinks. No one ever made anything cool happen by maintaining the status quo. You gotta do your own thing.
jokerjokerjoker was formed in the fall of 2001 by guitarists Mark Barovich and Davis Burton. The band features Doug Carrier (bass guitar), Paul Voute (drums) and Steve Minotti (vocals). 2002 saw several gigs at various South Florida venues, as well as work in the studio writing and rehearsing new songs. During the summer and fall, the band recorded their debut CD, Hit the Wall.
The self produced and recorded CD was released in February 2003, on the bands own Hydrophonic label. They are now gigging and promoting the new recording through a growing network of venues. A tour of the southeast is scheduled for summer 2003.
Mark and Burton met at school and joined forces in 2000, out of frustration with the current state of rock music, and looking to kick it up a notch with something creative and different. After a variety of personnel changes, they hooked up with Doug. Mark and Doug had both played in other bands with Paul, and Doug and Paul had played with Steve. When the five of them finally got together, things gelled immediately. The band called themselves jokerjokerjoker, aka Joker, aka JJJ.
The music blends super-heavy guitar riffs and a variety of effects, laid over 70s-style old school bass and drums. The lyrics explore psychology, philosophy and politics in place of your standard boy-meets-girl and "I dont want to be like you" songs. The band frequently experiments with a variety of tweaks and synthesizer-like guitar sounds. Comparisons? Maybe Van Halen meets Pink Floyd?
In between gigging and promoting "Hit the Wall," the band is writing and recording their follow-up release.
