Editorial Reviews
Direct from California with a lot of Memphis soul POWER13 is breaking through with a sound that is everything that is beautiful and dirty about Rock 'n' Roll. Backed with a strong yet subtly swinging rhythm section, punctuated by blues-tinged, searing guitar leads and driven by impassioned, scorched soul singing with an Americana twist, POWER13 is a near-religious experience. POWER13's Rock with Soul concept of Americana mixed with Rhythm and Blues, blends the two genres until they become something entirely new.
POWER13 is just a damn good Rock 'n' Roll band that brings together classic yet fresh songwriting with extraordinary musicianship and a no-holds barred performance ethic.
In 1994, after coming off the road as a keyboardist/backing vocalist with Slash recording artists Field Trip, Paul Manousos realized that he wasn't answering his true calling. He had the songs, he had the voice... now he needed a band. Not just any old band would do. Heavily into the Stax/Volt sound Paul needed to find a rhythm section that could reach the level of Stax/Volt heavies like Donald 'Duck' Dunn and Al Jackson Jr. and a guitarist that could touch upon Steve Cropper's genius. The search was on. In 1995 Paul formed the band Sway with an oft-changing line-up of local musicians. After gigging around the San Francisco Bay Area, Paul realized that Sway couldn't live up to the vision and they soon disbanded. The search was on once again, and this time there would be no compromising.
In late 1998 Paul hooked up with bass player extraordinaire Edgar San Gabriel formerly of the Flying Monkeys and Small Time Napoleons. Edgar not only brought in the solid groove that Paul had been searching for but also a connection to his longtime counterpart and former Flying Monkey, the big beat; drummer Joe LoBue. The three began forging the path that would lead to the arrival of POWER13. Aftera short stint with guitarist Zachary Smith the need for a bluesier guitar sound became apparent. Thus emerging blues guitarist Ari Bloom came onto the scene. Young in age but with fingers as wise as those of Mick Taylor. The groove, the beat, the blues and the voice. This is POWER13.
POWER13, they've got the goods. A dynamic four piece band with the ability, persistence and tenacity to take that quantum leap over the quagmire of rock 'n' roll mediocrity. Feel it.
