Missouri's Ozark Mountain Daredevils hammered together a sound that would have made them dead ringers for natives of the Appalachians, rather than of the Midwest. Not quite bluegrass, hillbilly, or even Southern rock, there was something decidedly different about their sound. The Daredevils are probably best remembered for their No. 3 hit, "Jackie Blue." A melody with just enough minors and sense of foreboding to classify it as Southern gothic, the chorus had a falsetto line that--c'mon, admit it--just about everyone's imitated at least once. Not a hits collection--their only other Top 40 appearance was "If You Wanna Get to Heaven"--Best of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils is a showcase of the band's instrumentation. If it had strings, the band played it, and banjoes, mandolins, guitars, and dulcimers get plucked, strummed, and stroked with a charm and skill only the Daredevils could muster. "Homemade Wine," "Keep on Churnin'," "Road to Glory," and "Fly Away Home" are some of the more memorable moments here. Fans no doubt have all of the material already, but for non-fans, Best of is a great introduction. --Steve Gdula
