Yes, those are real drums you hear. Played by Thomas Klein, one quarter of this German quartet, those drums make all the difference. Spend enough time listening to techno, and after a while drum machines don't sound so artificial. Spend enough time listening to what passes for rock these days, and live drums don't sound so authentic. It takes something alien--like the thoroughly electronic context provided by the other three members of Kreidler--for you to hear all over again what a lovely thing a trap set is. A modest revelation, perhaps, but modesty is what Kreidler specializes in. Tracks like "Au-Pair" (which bears a mild resemblance to "Bittersweet Symphony"--somebody call the lawyers!) happily settle for midtempo grooves, subtle dub effects, and nifty little mini-melodies played by To Rococo Rot's Stefan Schneider on bass. This is odd, but it isn't mind-bending music. It's music that soothes minds that were bent a long time ago--and wouldn't have it any other way. --Jeff Salamon
