About the Artist
Joao 'Tita' Fonseca has known the haunting, string-driven sounds of Morna and the brassy rhythms of Coladera all his life. Growing up in Brava in the Cape Verde Islands, he has felt this music deep within his soul. From an early age he has wanted to be both a performer and composer. He helped form his first band, Voz Da Independencia (Voice Of The Independence), at the age of ten. Playing both the harmonica and drums, he became popular. By thirteen, he left the small island of Brava and came to America with the rest of his family.

Once in America an old family friend Manuel (Nui) Dossantos became a strong influence and gave Tita a chance to perform with older musicians for 'Nui & The Melodia. Playing the drums with this five-member band, Tita learned the ins and outs of music - artistically and commercially. Tita then emerged as a major figure on drums and vocals in his new band, 'Midnite Star', a group of some importance in the Rhode Island and Massachusetts area in the eighties. In recent years, he sings with local church choir during the holiday season, bringing his own special touch to devotional music.

Tita was not satisfied, however, with doing other people's music and long nursed to desire to compose his own music. Something his father Againaldo Fonseca, had done before him. sifting through his father's songs, he began to work on his own material, coming up with the idea for PAPA. A musical blend of songs old and new, fast and slow, some by father and some by son. The vocals is sung by Tita and his older sister Saozinha 'Sao' Fonseca and performed with the help of a group of brilliant studio musicians.

PAPA is a unique artistic creation, capturing the spirit of a family and a rich musical tradition combining elements of Cape Verdean, African, Brazilian and Caribbean music. PAPA is well worth your attention.
