WILL DOTY - (Lead pans, double second pans and vocals.)
Will Doty was born in Jacksonville, Florida. At an early age he started private lessons on a variety of instruments eventually finding a talent for percussion. Early on, marching percussion was a big part of his training. During a very successful marching career, Will was a 3- time member of the Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle corps and was ranked in the top 10 in solo and ensemble competitions from his first year on. During this time Will met many of his influences in percussion. The funk stylings and sheer writing ability of Mickey Hartzog, the graceful method of movement of Lee Hanson, as well as many others including John Campese, Jeff Prosperie, Jim Atwwod, and Bob Moses provided strong musical influences and direction. It was during this time Will worked with Allan Murray, learning musical values and work ethic from one of the leading educators in marching percussion. Attending McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Will studied with Dr.Terry Mahady whom he considers to be the biggest influence of his life. During his college career Will was the writer/arranger for the Pride of McNeese Drumline for 3 years as well as Instructor/clinician for Many high schools throughout the south. 4 years in the Lake Charles and Rapides Symphony Orchestras gave Will a highly developed classical background. Will then attended Troy State University in Troy, Alabama transferring to study with Robert W. Smith whom he met while marching in Magic and had developed a friendship with. During the time at Troy, Will studied under Paula Williams whom he has great respect for.
During college, Will got the opportunity to play with Andy Narrell, one of the top steel drummers in the world today. This experience led Will to the Steel Drum and the world of pan. Rigorous training and hundreds of gigs each year has made will into a very accomplished pannist. Will now plays lead pan in First Coast Steel and resides in Jacksonville. It is his hope that First Coast Steel will continue to push the boundaries of steel pan music and bring the new music to the masses. STEVE CYBULSKI (guitar pans, vocals) - was born 1969 in Carmel, California. As the youngest of six children, Steve, was exposed to a wide variety of music throughout his youth. The family stereo had "spun" music of genres the ranged from Motown to Willie Nelson, and The Beatles to the Moody Blues that eventually created a "web" of a uncomparable repertoire for this soon to be aspiring musician. Steve began learning the fundamentals of percussion in the 6th grade that laid the foundation of "good timing" and "feel"' for music. Upon discovering the recordings of James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorius , Larry Graham and Donald Duck Dunn, steve fell in love for the first time - with the Bass. He was in the 10th grade when he picked up his first electric bass and if lead him to continue his music studies at the University of North Florida. He studied under the direction of Jazz greets Bunky Green, Bill Prince, Rich Madison, Kevin Bales, Geoff Smith, and Barry Green. His time at UNF allowed him to participate in projects with many Jazz Giants such as Ahmad Jamal, Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, Elie Marsalis, Tito Puente and many more.
Steve began to play professionally at the age of 19. With his own family to support and tuition to pay he got "sly-on-the-side". After studying improvisation, arranging, theory and the fundamentals of jazz in the day, Steve's music flowed info the live music scene at night. He has worked with top southeastern bands and artists such as Pretty Boy Freud, The Glass Camels, Caribbean Sound, and Jazz ginger Linda Cole. If wasn't long before Steve was considered one of the most versatile bass players in North Florida. With his own creative juices bursting at the seams, Steve organized his own group "Cookie Bush". Cookie Bush developed high energy - shake everything you got sound that took funk and jazz to new extremes. He
Product Description
First Coast Steel is a five-member steel drum band from Jacksonville Florida. Formed in 1998 by Will Doty and Steve McDowell, First Coast Steel was formed with the purpose of bringing a fresh new sound to the world of steel drumming. Incorporating the styles of reggae, rock, funk, hiphop and island music, the sound is original and unique. The band strives to change the stereotype of steel pan by using the instrument in nontraditional roles. For too long the steel drum has been viewed as a novelty instrument relegated to serve as the ambassador for cruise ships worldwide. We take the steel drum and use it as if it were an electric guitar. We seek to replace the simple melody, off the cruise ship steel drum standards with a modem jam-based, party driven repertoire that entices people to move and dance. The best way to appreciate our band is to see us live. We play hundreds of shows every year with many on the road.
Our live shows are an explosion of sound, filled with driving energy and inviting sounds. A staple act in Florida's top clubs and music venues for over 5 years, we have traveled far and wide to entertain thousands. In 2002 we released our first all original C.D. It contains 11 songs that are meant to represent a dramatic departure from the traditional steel drum album. The new CD release can be purchased in the merchandise section of firstcoaststeel.com. If you would like more information about the band feel free to e-mail us at firstcoaststeel@yahoo.com.
Tour dates and schedule information are updated regularly so be sure to visit often. We look forward to seeing you and your friends at our next show.
