Product Description
It has been said that all translation of poetry is a horn window, allowing only a certain quantity of light to pass through. Traditionally, poetry is sung on the subcontinent and, over the centuries, the art of metrical singing has been carefully nurtured and developed. Even today, a mushaera, or poets gathering, in India is an occasion for joy. For sharing. For celebration.
The ghazal has had many faithful adherents because its content essentially emerges from the depths of human longing; yearning of the lover to be merged in the Beloved. It was in this form that Merwan Sheriar Irani, later to be known as Meher Baba, sang and wrote spontaneously in the years he dedicated to the service of Sadguru Upasani Maharaj.
Meher Baba at times expressed seven years of acute struggle and his return to "human consciousness of the illusion of duality" in ghazals under the takhallus, or pseudonym of Huma, a phoenix. Baba sang ecstatically to his Beloved songs of anguish, of love, and of complete surrender. "Loving God, only for love of God."
Meher Baba wrote over forty ghazals under the takhallus of Huma. These ten ghazals are only a few gems, which have been pulled out of the treasure chest of ghazals that Meher Baba has given to posterity. Huma, in his ghazals, is a singer of songs and his songs do not follow formal rules of meter. In the English translation, a form of expression has been adopted that is believed to be simple and lyrical without compromising on the meaning and essence of each ghazal.
"There are some who will listen to these songs and sing them. To all those in tune with Meher Babas divinity, happy singing."
