Editorial Reviews

From Rhythm Magazine
A reissue from 1977, this Baka Pygmy collection is rough and instrumentally simple (mostly drums, rattles and chants), using minimal means to achieve maximal results. Both the ritual and profane music here can be divided into two general types-long, percussive dirges and earthy, polyphonic a cappella chants. The album opens and closes with "Music for the Buma Dance," a tuneless dirge that seems to go on endlessly. Originally used for sorrowful events, such chants now celebrate life and are sung when foreign guests visit a village. Women sing the more melodic pieces, such as the utterly serene "Hut Song," where the voices of 13 young girls intertwine. The most startling music occurs when children, chanting with their hands cupped over a river, create a piece of unmediated playfulness on "Water Drum."
