Editorial Reviews
In a music scene filled with pop stars and American idols, its rare to hear a songwriter with purpose. Maybe thats why Dan Nicky catches people off guard.
He surprises people who stopped listening to new artists decades ago. . . they begin to hear some of Cat Stevens coming through, or maybe Harry Chapin . . . and they become curious.
Younger crowds get their attentions grabbed too, especially fans of bands like U2. In the 1980s, U2s music and activism worked toward healing a fractured Ireland and South Africa. Dan Nicky is following in U2s footsteps, but hes dealing with a different fracture: the rift between America and the Muslim world.
Its an issue close to his heart, since he lived several years in the Muslim country of Indonesia. Nicky eventually fled the country in fear of anti-American extremists.
In response to these extremists, he wrote The Setting Sun, an anthem of courage in the face of fear. This song hits home in the U.S., where the fear of terror and the anxiety over a struggling economy are keeping many people from truly living their lives and taking risks.
Risk taking is familiar to Nicky: The profits from the sale of his debut CD, Rhyme for Reason, are being used to develop the careers of Indonesian musicians. Its part of a project called Aman, which means "secure" in Indonesian.
Theres nothing secure in it for Dan Nicky . . . but it commends him to his own generation, which has been rebelling against a shallow, profit-hungry music industry by copying and sharing music over the Internet. College students and younger audiences welcome the lyrical depth Nicky offers in songs like "Bed of Bones," a tirade against corporate greed in America, and "Rhyme for Reason," a denunciation of hypocritical religious leaders.
These songs, and the Aman project itself, combine idealism and angst with meaningful thought and emotion. Maybe this explains Dan Nickys multi-generational appeal . . .and his tendency to catch people off guard.
Product Description
Ever since Chicago musician Dan Nicky invented the international rock band known as Aman, he's found it hard to play solo in the Windy City. Nicky's collaboration with foreign artists complements his strong lyric writing abilities, leading to the distinctive rock music of Aman's debut CD, Rhyme for Reason. Rhyme for Reason isn't only about rock- the Indonesian, Afghan and Tunisian artists who contributed to the CD also showcase their talents on their native instruments. By transcending musical and cultural boundaries, these artists send a powerful message of international cooperation through exotic world music and creative rock and roll.
