About the Artist
Paul Alexandre John was born and grew up in Calcutta, India, the son of Armenian immigrants. He was captivated by the sounds of music, which he heard everywhere in the musical city of eastern India. He learned the intricacies of the Indian Raga from his guru, the Bansuri master, Pandit Gour Goswami. Today, he lives in Maine with his family, where he plays his flute, paints, bakes bread, and tends his garden. Ray Spiegel is a disciple of the late master of Tabla, Ustad Alla Rakha. Ray has also learned from Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Pandit B.S. Ramanna of Hydrabad. Today he is a master of tabla in his own right specializing in the Punjab Gharana (style) of tabla. He is the head of Simla House, Inc., (recording label) and Tal Vadya publishing. Ray has played and/or recorded with many great artists of Indian music, pop, jazz, and film and television scores. Among them: Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Aashish Khan, Mickey Hart, Diga Rhythm Band, Ustad Zakir Hussain, the Grateful Dead, Mike D. (Beastie Boys), Pandit Barun Kumar Pal, Ustad Sultan Khan, Pandit Vidyadhar Vyas, Jerry Garcia, Patty Smyth, Bill Cosby, Stephen James, and Danilo Perez. Ray also leads his own group, the Ray Spiegel Ensemble, who's 1999 recording, "Sum and Kali" topped the World Music charts in the year 2000.
Product Description
Paul Alexandre John plays authentic Indian Ragas on the Bansuri or Indian Bamboo Flute accompanied by Ray Spiegel on Tabla drums. Paul's rendition of the mysterious twilight raga called "Shree" evokes the lengthening shadows of early evening in two separate rhythm cycles; Vilambit (slow) and Drut Gat (fast). Raga Mian Ki Malhar is a seasonal raga, traditionally played during the monsoon. This raga symbolizes coming of the rains on the thirsty earth parched by the heat of summer. It is a sensuous time, when farmers leave their fields to the life-giving water; a brief period of leisure and romance in the life of the hard working villagers. Nomadic Melody is based on the music of the wandering tribal peoples of Southern Asia. Accompanied by hand claps, stick drums, Dhol, bells and manjiras (finger cymbals), this piece evokes images of a gypsy camps evening songs and celebrations around a fire in the vast desert.
