Boubacar Diebate, Senegal, is in the lineage of West African griots. For centuries griots have served as oral and musical historians, advisors (often to royalty), and social critics. The kora--a 21-stringed harp lute made of half a calabash covered with cow skin with a neck of wood strung with nylon strings--is a traditional griot instrument considered the choice of kings. Boubacar's compositions for Dialy Kounda, "griot family," are based in this rich and ancient West African tradition. In keeping with the griot practice, his song lyrics, sung in West African languages, address contemporary issues. His arrangements incorporate modern and Western instruments and musical elements. The result is powerful and exciting dance music that moves audiences around the world. Boubacar lives in Boulder, Colorado, where he teaches and performs. In Mandinka, Kambeng means unity. Concerned about the widespread human strife exerienced in the world today, Boubacar's music! is inspired by his belief that unity must prevail. This album is his contribution to the establishment of peace and love among all people.
