About the Artist
Guitarras y Congas was formed in 1992 by Martin Cohen, Gabriel Manzo, and Tony Menjivar. The three musicians held a rehearsal to prepare for a gig that Martin had arranged. "I had met Gabe on the Latin rock scene. He was playing with Malo and I was playing with Bandido. I was already deep into flamenco and was doing solo gigs and playing for dance classes when an opportunity came up to use an acoustic trio. A one night gig turned into a two year engagement, and after that it just continued. Gabe and I had similar musical backgrounds.

Guitarras y Congas is an instrumental group from San Francisco that fuses Latin rock, pop, and rumba. Formed in 1992, they have done close to a thousand gigs. "Chiles" is their first CD. Their sound is all about the guitar. Driving rumba flamenco guitars playing great original songs with beautiful melodies. And great solos. The solos are performed on steel string, flamenco, and electric guitars. The groove is provided by a bed of Latin rock percussion performed by authentic practitioners of the art. The record opens with "Baja Cantina", a dramatic song with an incredible solo by violinist Chris Kranyak. It is a defining performance. These guys are for real. In "Duelo", Gabriel Manzo turns in another wonderful performance on electric guitar. The "Pool Song" features congero Tony Menjivar and "San Remo" spotlights drummer and congero Leo Rosales. Both congeros spent years with the group "Malo". Bandleader Martin Cohen plays flamenco and electric guitars providing the harmonic blanket for soloists and playing memorable melodies and solos himself. What separates this record from the mass of so called "nuevo flamenco" records is the quality, variety, and depth of the compositions and the performances. Veteran players cutting loose. Playing songs they wrote on the bandstand, forged under the steady fire of hundreds of gigs. Carefully considered and infused with an energy of sprit, this is a fine debut.
