About the Artist
By the age of six, Joseph Lecuona had traveled half the world while accompanying his famous mother, Margarita Lecuona (composer of "Babalu" & "Tabu" and niece of Ernesto Lecuona), as well as his father, Pepe Armil (also a performer), while they toured the Americas. His earliest memories are of hotels, planes, trains, automobiles, dressing rooms and a fascinating parade of celebrities. Straight out of high school, Joseph was signed to Project 3 records owned by famous band leader Enoch Light. A few years later, Joseph was signed to CBS Records with his band, "Sunship", which toured with many big acts such as Jefferson Airplane, B.B. King and others. In the 80's Joseph was a member of the "MTV House Band" responsible for the "top" and "bottom" of the hour ID spots for MTV during its first years on the air, and his band, JZ Rock was one of the highest grossing live bands in New York City. In the 90's he moved to California where he began reacquainting himself with his Latin roots. "For years I wrote, played and sang Anglo music almost forgetting my heritage completely. But in the late 80's I began to hear the call of Latin music from somewhere deep inside me." That journey of re-discovery brought him to Los Angeles where he wrote and recorded "Canciones Romanticas" with his writing partner, Barbara Markay. Besides being fluent in the American and Latin pop idioms, Joseph has also composed and recorded a three movement symphonic suite for orchestra titled, "World Symphony Suite". After listening to "Canciones Romanticas" and the soon to be released World Symphony Suite, one can safely say that the fruit apparently does not fall far from the Lecuona family tree.
