Editorial Reviews
This is a compilation album sung by folk artistes who are preserving the traditional music of the people of India. The images of India are vibrant and bold. Flaming reds, royal blues, glowing pinks, parrot greens and canary yellows are scattered across its landscape, in tune with the traditional folk music of the people.
Openness, in fact, is a part of this music in every way, not just in the words, but also in its tone and feel. Most singers sing in booming voices, often starting at the highest ends of the scale, at pitches that even trained musicians might find hard to handle. The words are simply and fully expressed, and convey all the shades of human emotion - joy, sorrow, faith, love, passion and, especially, love. In the shade of my new nose ring, my love, spend the afternoon with me...
Folk songs are reverberations of the human spirit. They are as loud as thunder, and as soft as a feather; they charge ahead in the throes of passion and slow down like a caress; they rise high to conquer the world and bend low to hold a child's hand; they dash ahead like a train without brakes and halt suddenly to converse with the listener; and they pull at his heart strings, carrying him with the force of the music till he is enthralled... delighted... captivated!
Innumerable instruments are played, and the expertise in playing them is immense. Instruments that use all the different faculties of the artiste, his hands, legs, body, his mind, his sensibility and the entire energy of his person.
Beat of India's music has been recorded at the places where it is actually sung. Our teams have travelled across deserts, meandered through roads that exist only on maps, and crossed rivers without bridges to reach the beautiful, hidden thresholds of this land.
Product Description
Celebration Celebration with colours Coloured Water Coloured Mud Coloured Clothes Coloured Cheeks Coloured Souls
The spirit of colour that takes hearts higher than the highs of Bhaang, the drink of Lord Shiva. The mood is exuberant, the singing and dancing adds to it and the fun and frolic of the day allows elements of teasing. Charara Rang Dare by Urmila Srivastava describes the festivity. Charararara raaa, he drenches me with colour, Charara rara.... My cheeks are smeared with paint, my scarf falls off my head . This rogue has drenched me with color... Holi, the festival of colours is celebrated in most regions of India in one form or another. It is celebrated at the time of the year when the winter crop has just been reaped. On the full moon night in the month of Phagun, the first grains of the new crop are offered to the holi pyre. This is a collection of field recordings from the villages and towns of Northern India around Banaras, Mirzapur, Mathura and Allahabad and a substantial part of revenue goes back to the artistes.
