Music of Brazil: A Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim

Until recent re-examination, many thought of Jobim's music as little more than elevator piffle. And, without a proper subtlety and lightness of touch, Jobim's compositions can fade into schmaltz. Well, this "tribute" takes you back to those days when "Wave" and "Insensatez" were on the playlist of every wedding and bar mitzvah band. Perhaps they still are. With synth-heavy arrangements, and an elevator groove, Grupo Karibe give us a good reason why their name isn't even on the CD. To be sure, this is no tribute. If you need to know why Albert Ayler needed to happen, give it a listen. --D. Strauss
