Price of Glory: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Soundtrack] [Soundtrack]

Director Carlos Avila's film about Latino prizefighter Arturo Ortega (Jimmy Smits) may bring greater attention to the Latino boxing tradition, but he doesn't shortchange the music. Mainstays such as Los Lobos and the Texas Tornados (who perform a Cajun/Tex-Mex version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire") are obvious essentials. Thankfully, the soundtrack doesn't stop there and assembles notable groups performing Spanish rock with as many variations as Baskin Robbins has flavors. The first thing you'll notice is how today's bands aren't concerned with the rules of any particular genre. Spanish guitar will underline a hip-hop groove, while flat-out punk rock, ska, and salsa join to create new forms. Puerto Rico's Puya--known to emulate Brian Eno surfing with a heavy-metal band--blend a lilting Caribbean sway with a hip-hop beat. California youngsters via Mexico, Patilla harness punk rock espanol-style. King Chango go ska. The music is anything but predictable. --Rob O'Connor
