Roberto Pulido y Los Clasicos emerged in the mid-'70s as an accordion-and-twin-saxophone-fueled outfit that merged the rural conjunto sound with the modern Tejano genre. The magic of such smoothness is illustrated here on the cuts "No Hace Falta Que Me Digas" and "La Tumba Sera el Final," two midtempo rancheras imbued with the mellow polka spirit of traditional conjunto. Also part of the charm is Pulido's nasal, high-pitched voice, which is reminiscent of norteño singers. Pulido's uncle Lionel, on the accordion, is one of the most underrated players in the genre. Listen to his intricate runs on tunes like "El Trato" and "El Footsie." On "Ahora Es Tarde," Pulido teams up with Tejano star Emilio for a touching duet about failed romances. --Ramiro Burr
