Editorial Reviews
Hot on the heels of their last release, "Somethin' Diferente" picks up where Alex Torres y Los Reyes Latinos left off, with more focus and clarity.
But most of all with more spirit. I have no clue what they're singing about (even the liner notes are hard for a white guy to figure out - maybe that's on purpose), but I know it's fun. Sonically, it's a step up from their last release as well- more thought-out even and balanced. From the festive "Pido Disculpa" to the peppy and punchy "Amorcito", the blazing instrumental "Sunny - Side Up", the relentless rhythm of "Guaracha La Cucaracha" and the anxious percussion-fest of the Torres-penned "Somethin' Diferente", this is simply the soundtrack to an outrageous party. It's admirable enough that Torres passionately works at keeping alive an ethnic music worthy of preserving, but let's face the facts: Alex Torres y Los Reyes Latinos are a great band, period, not just a great band of thier genre.
Product Description
"Somethin' Diferente" is a wonderful sample of The Latin Kings' vast styles, including Merengue, Salsa, and Latin Jazz. Also The Latin Kings premier two styles, Guaracha and Mozambique. "Que Nos Paso" begins with a moving rubato Cello solo played by Trombonist Ken Olsen's son, Ken Olsen, Jr.. Just as the Cellist, the three gifted percussionists take solos at the beginning of "Somethin' Diferente". Sax, trumpet and trombone solos follow a piano solo played in the spirit of the man the song is dedicated to, Eddie Palmieri. "Sunny-Side Up" is a Latin Jazz piece written for the late Latin Kings member, Joey DellaRatta. It also includes solos from different pieces in the band including vibes.
