FRANK PORTOLESE
LAST CALL (S-SSD 0072)
"He pushes from one musical climax to the next...a remarkable range of ideas" --Howard Reich-The Chicago Tribune
"wonderful, excellent.." -- George Borgman-Cadence
Chicago guitar legend Frank Portolese returns for this second SOUTHPORT CD, "Last Call" continuing a journey and tradition of fine young 6 string players from the Chicago scene. The 11 track CD is a mix of Frank's originals and standards, but in the hands of Frank Portolese, no "standard" can be considered a standard and his original tunes achieve another level of communication. The musical mix of past traditions along with a brilliant subtle fire give Mr. Portolese his own sound. The sound of the highly trained romantic. And the sound has the fire.
Joining Frank on this CD is what turns out to be 2 active units. The Quartet includes Larry Luchowski on piano, Dave Marr on bass and Tim Davis on drums. The Trio is the original ensemble from Frank's 1st Southport CD, "Transparent" which showcases Brian Sandstrom on bass with the one and only Chicago ace, Rusty Jones on drums.
Track 2, "Burn Unit," a Portolese opus...cooks as the spider like blend of lines and chords tear into the terrain. There is a quiet beauty to track 4, Wayne Shorter/Miles Davis "E.S.P."
You can feel the crowd leaving the bar as Frank ends the evening and CD with the solo title track, "Last Call."
Southport Records continues to create new music from Chicago for a world market. We appreciate your support and time, LAST CALL!
