Editorial Reviews
Nostalgia is a funny thing. It's grounded in the past but dependent on the future. At its best it reflects the things of value that are worth remembering, and in fact, still valuable. Al was introduced into the world of nostalgia before he was old enough to know what it meant. The kid was a born entertainer with the sort of gifts artists and musicians could dream about. By age 11 he was playing drums and singing along with the records of Sinatra, Mathis, Prez Prado, Mongo Santamaria, and the George Shearing Quintet.
Al launched his solo piano career during seven years of study with legendary St Louis pianist Herb Drury. Through the 80's and 90's Oxenhandler made the rounds of St Louis establishments like Palm Beach Café, Lido, the Chase and Fedora Café to name a few. His current tenure at the Ritz-Carlton St. Louis is testimony to his lasting appeal and continued evolution.
In this recording we hear the pieces of Oxenhandler's musical puzzle all fall into place. His flawless time and effortless swing blossom in the presence of tunes that represent the best of the Great American Songbook as well as some originals. With over four decades of music under his belt Al has earned a sense of nostalgia for songs that remains timeless. In his words, "These are songs that make me smile. If I invoke that in the listener too, mission accomplished." Enjoy! -SHADES OF JAZZ, NPR Radio
