SOUTHPORT RECORDS continues its 20 year old quest to record and document new music from Chicago with its initial 1997 release by flutist, arranger and composer MICHAEL MASON - "EXPLORATION." This is Mason's third SOUTHPORT release and moves into a new direction with original compositions and creations, also offering the rare WYNTON MARSALIS early composition, "Twilight".
The music of Michael Mason brings a renewed energy to the musical terms 'hard hittting... cutting edge... progressive and modern'. "Exploration" moves in epic orchestral ways with haunting, lyrical modes always presenting the Mason flute tone. Musical collaborators on this CD include bassist Harrison Bankhead (heard world-wide at festivals and concerts with Chicago greats like Mars Williams and Edward Wilkerson), AACM members Kirk Brown, piano (brother to Chicago tenor ace, Ari), Avreeayl Ra-drums, Steve Berry-trombone, Yosef Ben Israel-bass, with drummer Michael Raynor, percussionist Aras Biskis and bassist Thaddeus Expose.
