Editorial Reviews
Jim Ritchie gained his understanding of piano performance through several teachers and instruction books along with many hours spent at the keyboard. He has earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Computer Science. In the course of his scientific work in computational quantum chemistry, he programmed computers ranging in size from mini's to super's. In addition, he contributed software to several commercial and scientific computer programs. In his new self-produced CD, "Scott Joplin Programmed by Jim Ritchie" he combines his knowledge of both music and computers. The result is a compilation of precisely rendered performances of some of Scott Joplin's compositions, along with supplementary material for instructional purposes and enhanced music appreciation.
Product Description
Modern computer technology allows performances of Joplin's music with precise control of tempi and dynamics. In "Fig Leaf Rag" Joplin noted 100 quarter notes per second and also gave the qualitative note "Slow March Tempo" found in earlier work as well. This is a good deal faster than modern piano performances, but can be computerized. Joplin's lack of tempo variations indicates the rags found here should be played with a steady beat - and that's how they were programmed. The result is a unique and true-to-Joplin interpretation. Joplin also composed marches, waltzes, and other dances. Some of his best are also included here to provide a well-rounded summary of his work.
This package contains two CD's. An audio CD is formatted for use in modern CD players; it contains recordings of keyboard performances. A data CD is formatted for use with WINDOWS. MIDI files are included on it and may be played at a slower tempo for instructional purposes. The MIDI files were also transcribed into standard notation and formatted for printing. Finally, a brief composer biography and music commentary is included. PDF format is used for the last two items.
