About the Artist
Quadrant is the platform of Double-bass player/Composer Eric van der Westen. Having completed several successful projects, such as 'The Eric van der Westen Octet' and 'Double Orchestra', in 1995 Eric founded a smaller five-piece ensemble, Quadrant, which has been his main project ever since. Being an open platform, Quadrant has employed many well-known musicians such as: Norma Winstone, Willem van Manen, Paul van Kemenade, Hans Sparla, Dré Pallemaerts, Hans van Oosterhout and others. All Quadrant's compositions are written by Eric van der Westen. Having spend a lot of time in Africa, his music is predominantly influenced by African traditional music. The combination of western jazz, improvised music and the multi-layered texture of African music gives Quadrant a very strong identity. An identity which is unbound by hypes and trends. Quadrant presents a mixture of Highlife, Bleyesk-impressionism, free Jazz and European modern improvised music. The instrumental basis of piano, two tenor or soprano saxophones, combined with rhythm section of double-bass and drums makes Quadrant an ensemble with a specific and special sound. So far Quadrant has released several albums: 'Diepkloof and other Songs from the Book' (1998, EWM/HLM Records), 'Naala and more Songs from the Book' (1999, EWM Records), 'It is what it is-featuring Norma Winstone' (2000, EWM Records) and a Quadrant Extended album called 'Me, Myself and I-Looking at the music of Charles Mingus' (2000, Challenge Records). This album is the result of a project in which 8 contemporary Dutch composers express their view on the works of Charles Mingus. Quadrant Extended consisted of 12 members (the basic five musicians with seven horns added) and toured very successfully through Holland and Germany in the fall of 1999. Quadrant's latest release is the beautifully written album 'Rush Hour' (2001, EWM Records)

Product Description
This latest album, the sixth release on EWM, is a new highlight in the discography of this fine productive band. You'll find a tasty blend of African and European improvised music but definitely more fused than on other familiar work. Produced by Pascal Vermeer and Eric van der Westen this CD has a superb sound. It differs from the other Quadrant albums through its very direct, almost reverbles sound. The interplay between the creative musicians is just intimately fabulous. Because no extra horns are added, contrary to all previous albums, the group sounds very solid and strong.
