Baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett is famous in avant-garde circles as the booming bottom voice in the World Saxophone Quartet, but he obviously yearns for a broader audience. That longing inspired his ensemble, Bluiett's Barbeque Band, which is also the title of this album. The band--which includes electric bass, electric keyboards, African drums and vocals--tackles gospel hymns, pop hits, jazz standards, and R&B-flavored originals. The results are unlikely to take over commercial radio, but they do represent a fresher version of fusion music than the usual slickness to be found under that category. The experiments with poetry reading and a children's choir are no more successful here than they are most places, but when Bluiett starts blowing fast and furious cadenzas on his big horn, the energy is undeniable. --Geoffrey Himes
