As I sat in Lionel Hampton's living room high above the ground swell of activity at Lincoln Center, Lionel suddenly got an inspiration. He said, "man, I can get you the who's who in jazz to record for a new label." I replied, "Lionel, that's a great name for a label, we'll call it Who's Who In Jazz." On that date in 1979, Who's Who In Jazz was born.
We went on to record some of the greatest names in the world of jazz. The original 14 Who's Who In Jazz sessions were produced by Lionel Hampton and myself and Lionel contributed musically to each one of them.
This album celebrates Lionel Hampton's greatest performances. Thanks to our friend, Ray Jenks of London, England, who programmed (from our Lionel Hampton catalog) the very best Lionel has to offer.
Hampton is not only a great musician, but is a great entertainer. When he steps onto the stage, the audience is spellbound as he jumps from vibes to drums and then to vocal- all with great poise and skill. Lionel Hampton is a first-rate entertainer. His contribution to jazz and music has an immortal place in history. -Robert W. Schachner
