The 1950s sessions John Hammond produced for the Vanguard label were typically showcases for mainstream musicians in danger of being left behind by the bebop revolution. The three duet albums Hammond produced with cornet player Ruby Braff and pianist Ellis Larkins were a little different, as these were not well-known Swing-era veterans but younger musicians who preferred to play in a prebop style. Duets Vol. 2 consists almost exclusively of standards featuring Braff's lyrical melodic statements and Larkins's metronomic-stride accompaniment and understated solos. Both musicians went on to enjoy long and varied careers. While neither could be considered an innovator, their work together exemplifies the old adage that good taste is timeless. ----Rick Mitchell
