“The story about how I found my way to Puccini is roundabout, and auspiciously begins with Miles Davis” says Liebman. “When I was in his band (1973) I would often be at his house on West 78th Street in Manhattan. One night I noticed the score to Turandot on the piano and asked him about it. He said that Gil (Evans) and he were going to do a collaboration on it. Nothing transpired of it, but it stayed in my mind.”
15 years later, Dave heard a version of Tosca sung by Placido Domingo, while he teaching in Portugal. “I heard these amazing melodies…and coupled with the memory of Miles having a Puccini score made me curious.” Dave then began his discovery of the music of Giacomo Puccini, with the help of Dr. Larry Fisher at East Stroudsburg University. “I studied the scores, listened to all the operas and spent months finding melodies that appealed to me, which I could adapt to my musical preferences. I spent one winter on the music in the early 90’s, which I put away until this recording became a reality.”
