New York City's annual Vision Festival is quickly becoming one of this country's most prestigious showcases for free, creative, and experimental jazz music. To raise funding for the event, organizers have issued this limited edition two-CD set featuring the greatest hits of the 1997 festival. Highlights include a terrific percussion/horn think piece from John Zorn and Susie Ibarra, a tremendously windy workout from William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra, and excellent contributions from the David S. Ware Quartet and Matthew Shipp. Other stellar performances include efforts by Butch Morris, Other Dimensions in Music, Hurricane, Rashid Ali's Prima Materia, and Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore dabbling with Lawrence Cook and Jon Voight for a quietly buzzing whisper of a tone poem. If you're hip to free jazz or creative music in general, you'll instantly recognize the magnitude of this collection. If you'd like to explore the abstract side of jazz-based music, you won't find a better road map. --S. Duda
