Comprised of downtown vets like trumpeter Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob, Lounge Lizards), saxophonist and drummer Peter Apfelbaum (Hieroglyphics Ensemble) and drummer Kenny Wollesen (John Zorn, Tom Waits), the first thing one notices about the Kamikaze Ground Crew is how extraordinarily winsome and versatile their music is. Including tunes inspired by Hendrix, Stockhausen, Satie, Huey "Piano" Smith, and a pop hit from the kingdom of Bhutan, Covers is a record that tumbles forward, exploring the source material with genuine enthusiasm and curiosity. From the wooly, honking blowouts on the Smith medley to the more bucolic tone poem of "Morning in Bhutan," the Kamikaze Ground Crew manage to make their stylistic leaps an engaging travelogue rather than a series of disconnected postcards from jazz tourists. Excellent, genre-defying music. --S. Duda
