The Fantasticks in Jazz

Probably best known for their jazzy instrumental versions of Stephen Sondheim shows, Terry Trotter and his trio turn their attention to the all-time off-Broadway classic, The Fantasticks. Pianist Trotter, bassist Tom Warrington, and drummer Joe LaBarbera gently swing through the familiar songs, aided by guest stars in two versions of the ballad "Soon It's Gonna Rain," first by the score's composer, Harvey Schmidt, on piano and later by pop-cabaret vocalist Maureen McGovern. Interestingly, Trotter follows the lead of the feature-film version released in 2000 by using the show's most famous number, "Try to Remember," as a finale rather than an opener. --David Horiuchi
