The Jim Ridl Trio Live

Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
In-demand pianist Jim Ridl is currently doing duet concerts with legendary guitarist Pat Martino, as well as working with the Dave Liebman Big Band. Originally from North Dakota, he spent time in Colorado before moving East to Trenton, New Jersey, where he currently resides in order to split his time between the New York City and Philadelphia jazz scenes.

Product Description
Preserving a concert in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania nearly two years ago, LIVE's virtuosic pianist Jim Ridl reinvents the "power trio." The opening track "First Rose" is entirely improvised, with only a tone row for source material, followed by a definitive version of Jim's "Only Half a Cup?" powered by Steve Varner's muscular bass. Another Ridl original, "Get After It Boogie," also featured on Jim's solo piano recording Blues Liberations, is utilized here as an apt introduction for a mysterious rendition of "Caravan," which like the evocative "Song of the Green River" (redolent of Ridl's North Dakota roots and serving as the CD's sole ballad) fades out because in live performance the music metamorphosed into other tunes not used for this project, due to obvious time constraints; otherwise there was no editing. The set concludes with "Cherokee," showcasing an expressively dynamic and melodic drum solo by Jim Miller, whose "characteristic flexibility...makes it sometime seem as if he's physically steering the band around the turns of whatever tune is rolling past" (-Cadence). To paraphrase Aaron Copland (from Music and Imagination), this is truly "Music...in a continual state of becoming."
