Tenor saxophonist Paul Dunmall makes the most of inspired, post-free-jazz din with the collective quartet Mujician, whose members all add prodigiously to this larger-band outing. Why Dunmall expanded Mujician's number to include tenor saxophonist Simon Picard, trombonists Annie Whitehead and Chris Bridges, and trumpeter Gerthin Liddington is evident in the music. Rather than begin with free-improvisational building blocks that mark the work of Mujician (pianist Keith Tippett, bassist Paul Rogers, and drummer Tony Levin), Dunmall has this group roar out in full swing. The trombones seem to get a lion's share of the ranging girth of the music, blowing as they do with loud, thick force. But Dunmall and Picard keep some pace, alternating their differently reedy voices in the mix, tempering Liddington's clipping trumpet and Tippett's tonally shorn (this is purposeful) piano. Produced by the great soprano sax pioneer Evan Parker, this recording highlights Dunmall the composer, and he takes the ensemble through dozens of configurations and territories, examining how a large band navigates the waters between free and scripted music. --Andrew Bartlett
