Stephane Grappelli with Phil Woods and Louis Bellson

Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
The Producer Meets the Artists- Grappelli: I had a lot of experience with a lot of people. Schachner (Producer): Let me bring Phil Woods and Louis Bellson in. I'm here with Stephane Grappelli. Thank you for making such wonderful music today, Stephane. Have you played with Louis and Phil before? Grappelli: I didn't have that pleasure. I played with Louis, yes, but not with Philip. Schachner: Many, many years ago! Grappelli: In fact, I met Philip in Paris for the first time. Woods: When we lived in Paris, Stephane and I discussed doing an album at some point, this maybe twenty years ago. Today, that dream has been realized so I am very honored and pleased. Grappelli: I'm very pleased to play with you. For me he is king of rhythm, like a Swiss watch. Schachner: Louis, when you were first told about this or asked about playing, what were the thoughts that went through your mind? Bellson: Well, with Stephane and Phil how can you miss? I said yes right away, because to me these two people are such magnificent musicians and such beautiful people and any time I get a chance to record with that kind of caliber in an artist, I don't discuss money of anything. I just go and that's it. Phil and I have worked together quite a bit, and I had the pleasure of working with Stephane Grappelli up at Paul Maison Vineyards. I had my small group there and Stephane had his group and what a delight! Grappelli: We joined. Bellson: That was a lot of fun, wasn't it? Grappelli: What a souvenir! Bellson: Oh, and Phil and I have been, well, we go back a little bit! Woods: Yes, we go back to Birdland. Bellson: Yes, Birdland. Woods: Phil and I worked in Birdland which gives you some idea as it's been closed a few years. Schachner: A lot of good memories and a lot of music. Woods: A lot of good memories, yes. And I would just like to endorse what Louis says, it is nice to work with real gentlemen and that's what we have been missing in the business and these are professional gentlemen that know their craft. It's a great privilege to play with people like this. Bellson: You know, I guess the main standard, Phil and Stephane. You guys know even better than I do. Isn't it marvelous when you come in and do a whole album in three or four hours? In today's standards, from what I understand, some people it takes them four months, some six months, some a year to do a whole album. Woods: And it stinks! (Laughing). Schachner: Louis, how do you feel about the future? Bellson: I have a great outlook on the future. I look at somebody like Stephane Grappelli and Phil Woods, and I think of one word, longevity. Schachner: Well, that great. I want to thank you again on behalf of Who's Who In Jazz and Discovery Systems for coming here to Dublin, Ohio and giving us your marvelous music. Bellson, Grappelli, Woods: Ask us again! Schachner: We certainly will!
