On this double-disc set, Schütze is uprooted from the steaming forest floor of Fourth World ambient music and dropped into a ghostly construction of dead-end staircases, arcane machines chiseled from rose-colored marble, and trigonometric magic. This forgotten world is an actual 18th-century Delhi observatory that looks part Roman ruins, part architectural impossibility courtesy of M.C. Escher. A monotone female voice like that of an oracle or medium intones the history of the site while crystalline drones shimmer around her words like a diamond casing. The Second Site release articulates the splendor and mystery of a landmark that stands untouched by the stark world of fiberglass insulation and steel beams. --Michael Woodring
