The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange is a young jazz-funk-groove septet from Nashville. The self-titled debut CD, released in 1998, is quite enjoyable and shows some real promise.

The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange stands out from the rest of the jam- band and jazz-funk crowd for a number of reasons. These talented musicians are all accomplished multi-instrumentalists. On various tracks the horn section can feature a wide range of sounds, from baritone sax to flute, and from bass clarinet to flugel horn. This provides for an extremely rich and textured sound. Underneath all that sound some fine keyboards, bass and percussion can be found, augmented quite often by a fine vibraphone player as well. The Guy Smiley Blues Exchange also breaks out interesting instruments not often found in this type of setting, such as kalimba and electric guiro.

The wide range of instrumentation opens up an extremely wide stylistic palette to the group, and they take full advantage of it. Featured on this CD are tracks written in a jazz-funk groove ("The Unexplained"), Latin jazz ("Diez Quatro, Buen Amigo"), hypnotic trip-hop ("Dreams," featuring guest vocalist Count Bass-D), cowboy jazz ("Freaky Love Monster"), and some very heady jazz pieces ("Mechanically Separated Chicken," "Snufalufagus"). Overall the grooves and rhythms stay danceable, even as the compositions explore mentally challenging and interesting harmonic and melodic possibilities. Very funky grooves groovy jazz, unique instrumentation, and a wide stylistic range make for a truly enjoyable CD from the Guy Smiley Blues Exchange.
