Kevin Mahogany is best known for his performance in the film Kansas City, but he is far more than a pretty face. His balance of wordless vocals and swinging, melodically rich interpretive skills makes him a jazz singer for the ages. Songs and Moments, recorded in 1994 before Mahogany became well known, showcases his talents admirably. Backed by a superb rhythm section of the sympathetic pianist John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith, and embellished by a six-piece horn section playing arrangements by Maria Schneider, Slide Hampton, and Freddie Hubbard, Mahogany demonstrates the breadth of his abilities on a program of classics including "Next Time You See Me," "Caravan," "My Foolish Heart," "Red Top," "Take the 'A' Train," and "When I Fall in Love." --John Swenson
