About the Artist
Cellist/bassist Buell Neidlinger has been at or near the center of the American music scene since the early fifties and is the only one to record with both Billie Holiday, Cecil Taylor, Igor Stravinsky and Frank Zappa. He has also recorded and performed with Tony Bennett, Lester Young, Rex Stewart, and the Gil Evans band, as well as participating in some history making Third Stream concerts at Circle in the Square with the Walden string quartet, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, and Bill Evans. In 1961 Buell became a member of the bass section of Sir John Barbirolli's Houston Symphony, moonlighting around Texas with Arnett Cobb, Little Esther Phillips, Bobby Blue Bland, and James Clay. In 1967 He was selected by Erich Leinsdorf to become a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music, where he and George Russell established the jazz department, and Buell commenced a teaching career which continues to the present; many of his former students hold important playing and teaching positions worldwide. Marty Krystall, known for his versatility, started his career in the early 70s working with Albert Collins, Artetha Franklin and Frank Zappa. He has also recorded chamber music with Peter Serkin and TASHI and has performed and recorded with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Although appearing in the sound tracks of over 300 motion pictures and TV shows on woodwinds, Krystall has always remained a dedicated jazz musician and has recorded as a leader or co-leader for the K2B2, Denon, Soulnote and MA labels as well as performing or recording with Miles Davis, Freddy Hubbard, Charlie Haden and Jaco Pastorius. In 1983 Nat Hentoff wrote, “Tenor saxophonist Marty Krystall is one of the most passionate, powerfully swinging, and just plain unselfconsciously original players in all of jazz.” Brenton Banks began his childhood studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He started working in nightclubs in 1935 with saxophonist Ernie Freeman (who later arranged for Sinatra on Strangers in the Night) and followed Freeman to the Navy Band in 1942. While on the faculty of U Tennessee at Nashville in 1952, Brenton became Chet Atkins’ concertmaster at RCA, leading the string section and creating arrangements for recordings by Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and a host of others. A legendary figure, he has highly developed classical and jazz abilities on both piano and violin. His former students have become established jazz artists – Jim Hall, Andrew White and Hank Crawford, to name a few. Since moving to California in 1976 he has performed and recorded with Red Callender, Al Mckibbon, Teddy Edwards, John Carter, Buell Neidlinger, Horace Silver, and others. Billy Osborne, (born 7/16/42) who has known and played with Neidlinger since 1957, is a rambunctious and playful drummer. Using just a snare, bass drum, and cymbals, Osborne brings a slappy humor to the music. He has played with Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Guiffre, Big Joe Turner, and many others. He was the leader of the 70’s R&B group L.T.D., and currently writes for and works with Ray Charles. Jerry Peters (born 11/6/46) on Yamaha DX9 brings a new dimension to Monkian performance. Jerry’s virtuostic keyboard abilities are grounded in his many years of experience playing piano and organ and directing the choir in his father’s church (God’s music), and honed by his work with The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, Syreeta, and Stevie Wonder. Hugh Schick – Born 3/14/63 in Patterson, NJ. Recorded with Buell Neidlinger, Marty Krystall, Yusef Lateef. Hugh has performed with Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Marian McPartland, Victor Gaskin, Barry Harris and Henry Butler. A graduate of Occidental College, he has been a member of the adjunct faculty, Jazz Workshop at UMass., Amherst. William Jeffery – Born 3/23/49 in Dallas, TX., attended Texas Southern

Product Description
Legendary bassist Buell Neidlinger and reedman Marty Krystall front a quartet and quintet performing the music of Thelonious Monk live in two separate concerts - the first one a radio broadcast in honor of Monk’s 71st birtday - the second opening for Ornette Coleman at the Palace Theatre in Los Angeles. Both of these toured the U.S., Italy, Holland and Germany as the Monk repertory group - THELONIOUS. “I had been playing and recording Monk’s music since the late 50’s, but in recent times, Marty and I became increasingly fascinated with it. We noticed that a ot of people said what a great musician and a tremendous influence Monk was, but in most cases, they weren’t bothering to play his music, except the more familiar pieces like ‘Round Midnight’ and ‘Straight No Chaser’. We didn’t want to be guilty of that.”

Neidlinger and Krystall aren’t. A typical Thelonious performance finds the quartet airing such complex, challenging, yet ultimately appealing tunes as “Skippy,” “Four in One” and “Little Rootie Tootie.”
