Comparisons to Oscar Peterson are inevitable. Both Canadian, Jones studied piano with Peterson's sister for 12 years and, most importantly (and not surprisingly), he plays the piano in the same, bluesy, swinging style that is a Peterson trademark. But as this set shows, Jones is much more than a mere copy of his more famous countryman. "Mark My Time" is a wonderful original number, while his take on Peterson's own "Hymn to Freedom" simultaneously acknowledges a debt and stakes a claim to independence. --Percy Keegan
