Malinverni's sophomore effort on Reservoir's "New York Piano" series indicates a quickly maturing style - a mode of communication based uncompromisingly on heartfelt introspection. Never showy, Malinverni's pianistic forte boasts an ability to breathe with the music via a careful balance of articulate melodicism and musical silence. No member of his trio is particularly verbose. Bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Leroy Williams approach the music with the same deliberate sensibilities. At times, as on the sublime ballad "Imagination," Malinverni's touch is so light that the hammer barely grazes the strings. The trio unabashedly pays tribute. Malinverni's fascination with Herbie Nichols becomes apparent through the frolicking line of his original "Courtin' the Muse." Approaching "Blue in Green" as a ballad waltz emphasizes the Bill Evans connection to a piece generally - and incorrectly - attributed solely to the pen of Miles Davis. According to the liner notes, Malinverni's discovery that "Lucky to Be Me" was composer Leonard Bernstein's personal favorite mandated this CD's version. Here, Malinverni stretches, taking advantage of the song's interesting harmonic devices by conjuring one illuminating chorus after another. Unafraid of pursuing the elusive dynamic level pianissimo, this fine trio incidentally obtains the highest degree of elegance.
