As a pianist, Brubeck is the same old blues-derived, Euro-derived, block chord pounder of yore, while his songs bear all of the melodic freshness of yesterday's Tin Pan Alley rejects, and this despite their occasional use of odd meters, chromatic harmonies and non-triadic voicing.
