Editorial Reviews
Dick Heckstall-Smith is a legendary figure in Jazz, Blues and rock, having started with Sandy Brown's innovative band in the mid-fifties and moving on to work with Blues Incorporated alongside Alexis Korner, drummer Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce on bass and harmonica player Cyril Davis. He moved on to The Graham Bond Organisation in 1963 and later to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967. He formed Colosseum with Jon Hiseman in 1968 and the band ran until 1972, when Dick recorded his first solo album, A Story Ended. After spending a few years out of music, partly due to ill-health, he returned to performing with Mainsqueeze, supporting Bo Diddley amongst others and putting together his own band DHSS.
He continues to perform as an in demand session player, as well as recently recording his fourth solo album Blues & Beyond, supported by old mates Clem Clempson, Jack Bruce, and John Mayall.
Product Description
Originally released in 1991 on the Aura label, this was only Dick Heckstall-Smith's second solo album despite him having spent over 35 years in the music business.
Woza Nasu, as its Zulu originated name suggests, betrays African influences. It was amazing that after so long in the business, this was Dick's first instrumental jazz album. Like much of Dick's work, the album came in for much critical acclaim and on it he is joined by Alan Weeks on guitar, bassist Ike Leo, on keyboards, Dick's colleague from Mainsqueeze, Dave 'Munch' Moore and Pete Brown (who not only co-produced the album and played percussion on some tracks, but also funded the recording). The album was re-released on Mainstream as Where One Is, but it is now issued with a track originally left of the first release. Isa's, a previously unreleased song over seven minutes long was recorded at the same time as the rest of the album.
Now that Woza Nasu is finally available in it's complete form, this vibrant life enhancing music should come to the attention of many people, both jazz/blues enthusiasts and fans of good music generally.
