Editorial Reviews
In one moment of quiet exploratory improv on the Ben Perowsky Trio's live recording, you can hear a woman yell, "Stop It!" in the background. Ostensibly, she's not addressing the band, but rather a fellow patron of the Knitting Factory's sometimes unruly Tap Bar, where the recording was made during the trio's weekly residency. As much as any stylistic inclination, this ambience might explain why the trio typically forgoes introspection for an overall muscularity and brashness of sound.
Drummer Perowsky (Dave Douglas' Magic Triangle, Uri Caine's Mahler project, Don Byron's Bug Music) and bassist Scott Colley (Andrew Hill), who have played together as a rhythm team for years, spin a steadily complex dialogue with sudden turns of phrase. Reedist Chris Speed finds a strong voice in the discussion: He articulates a fount of ideas on tenor with free-jazz-screeching force that still manages to tell a story, and displays his Balkan fascination on the clarinet.
Perowsky's wide-ranging influences come through in his choice of material. In addition to his originals, there is a blazing cover of Charlie Parker's "Segments," a sombre take on Ellington's "Sentimental Mood," and a relaxed handling of Messiaen's "Danse de la Fureur." Perowsky really shows his roots, though, with the reverence he affords Pink Floyd's "Money," which the trio slows to the speed of an armored money train grinding through a subway station late at night.
As the disc fades into the Tap Bar's din of chatter and clinking glass, you'll probably wish you were there to yell for more.

Product Description
The Ben Perowsky trio featuring Chris Speed on saxophone and clarinet, Scott Colley on bass and Ben on drums has recently recorded their first cd live at the Knitting Factory in N.Y.C. The raw excitement in the room as well as an intense creative process is captured here, live on this important debut CD. Following his necessity to lead a group of his own, Perowsky took a special weekly engagement at the Knitting Factory in 1997, with the idea of developing some new compositions and a band approach. The current B.P. Trio evolved from these well-received late night jam sessions. Stirring up a strong buzz in music circles around town, they decided to document these weekly events.
