"A powerfully impressive debut from one of Boston's finest pianistic talents."
Product Description
Modulation offers a set of original compositions and jazz standards. Described by famous composer Earl Zindars as "a fresh sounding idiom," Barkan's music is vibrant and inventive. The driving rhythm of "Paul's Groove," the nostalgic echo in "Brazilian Suite #2," and the lilting bounce of "Amaravati Devi is Getting Married" express a connection to African and Brazilian traditions. Some of the compositions, while paying homage to straight ahead jazz, incorporate influences from hip hop or embrace free form improvisation. The standards are performed with a lyricism that has its own characteristic phrasing, assertive rhythm, and is alternately serious and jovial. Dan Greenspan and Harvey Wirht, both expressive and original musicians, play with a diverse vocabulary ranging from Caribbean to Argentinean music that complements Barkan's approach and allows the trio to paint with a rich musical palette.
