Fatah's Blues

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
A solo piano session recorded in New York City on March 7, 1964. Hines' playing was always remarkable; it is even more-so without the safety net of a backing band. His unique way of turning through the melody and fully ambidextrous style was described by music critic Richard Cook as "enabling him to finger runs and supplant rhythms at will [with a full] range of pianistic devices, equalled only by Tatum and Taylor." The nine tracks recorded on that day — a set of standards, a blues, even a theme from Tosca — find "Fatha" at the height of his powers.
