During organist Jimmy Smith's tenure at Blue Note, he recorded three landmark all-star jam sessions that included heavyweights like trumpeter Lee Morgan, drummer Art Blakey, and trombonist Curtis Fuller. Although this CD configuration contains the 20-minute opus "The Sermon," it expands the original recording by including five pieces culled together as Houseparty. The leisurely tone of those sessions surely aided in the remarkable empathy demonstrated on Charlie Parker's "Confirmation" and Rodgers & Hart's "Blue Room." All the guests boast wonderful solos, but more than any other single element, Smith's blues-informed accompaniment and bebop-enhanced solos enliven this classic. A must for both the Blue Note connoisseur and novice. --John Murph
