Editorial Reviews
Mark Bialczak, music critic, Syracuse Post - Standard, March 4, 2003
"Ward's devotion to the poetry of Langston Hughes shines through on every line of 'Rhapsody in Hughes 101.' "
Product Description
This album is an interpretation of the poetry of Langston Hughes, done as spoken word with music of various styles - jazz, blues, gospel and hip hop. The album combines the incomparable talents of Val Ward, known nationally as "The Voice of the Black Writer," and those of Robert "Baabe" Irving III as music producer and arrangerand an all - star group of Chicago - based musicians. Ward does soul - searching interpretations of 21 of the most memorable poems of Langston Hughes, one of the greatest African - American writers of all time. Liner notes were written by Arnold Rampersad, a professor at Stanford University and Hughes' principal biographer. Rampersad says, "Rhapsody in Hughes 101 is the perfect send - off for the second 100 years of the legacy of Langston Hughes. ... This is Langston's work as Langston himself would have wanted to present it."
