On this 1993 recording, Ray Barretto offers a very light synthesis of jazz, Latin, and funk elements, mixing trumpet, flute, and synthesizer with his own brilliant conga drumming. The music frequently touches on crucial influences from Barretto's own musical past: "Song for Chano" invokes the memory of Chano Pozo, the first great Cuban drummer in jazz, while Raymond Vega's muted trumpet on "Beautiful Love" is strongly reminiscent of Dizzy Gillespie's quieter moments. Tenor saxophonist Jay Rodriguez is more animated on Eddie Harris's "Freedom Jazz Dance" and Benny Golson's "Killer Joe," adding some headier spirits to an often pleasantly subdued session. --Stuart Broomer
